Meet First Black Woman Professor in Pure Mathematics from the University of South Africa (UNISA)
A Nigerian born Mrs Oghenetega Ighedo is the first black woman to obtain a PhD in Pure Mathematics from the University of South Africa (UNISA), in its 149-year-long existence.
She started her education career at Delta State University, Nigeria where she got her BSC in Industrial Mathematics . She further did her MSC in Pure Mathematics from the University of Ibadan.
Prof Oghenetega Ighedo is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
She said her source of encouragement is her mother. Because her mother was a retired mathematics teacher.
Prof Oghenetega Ighedo said she decided to study pure mathematics was motivated by the fact that not only are there few black pure mathematicians but there are fewer black women who are pure mathematicians.
She further stress it out that even though she has 3 kids yet she was not discourage. Therefore I encourage women not to let adversity and challenges deter them from pursuing their goals.
