Pat Utomi ask Urges INEC to make debate compulsory for all candidates!

While Speaking at World Press Conference organised in Lagos on Tuesday, Mr Patrick Utomi emphasised that open debates are a way to strengthen the social contract between the government and the people, adding that it also improves accountability.

The Political Economy Professor and Founder of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Pat Utomi urges The Nigerian Electoral Commission (INEC) to disqualify any candidate who refuses to participate in debates.

He said, We would like to make INEC insist that anyone who cannot participate in a debate should be disqualified from that election; especially at the Presidential, gubernatorial and National Assembly levels.

This is coming at a very critical time and is important because we have over the yeard withnessed Political candidates especially for the Presidential elections boycott these debate and although they are not organised by INEC, they are very crucial as a determining factor to choose our next leader.

He encouraged INEC to take it upon themselves to organize these debates and make it compulsory for all candidates as it is done in the western world.

Nigerians need to be smarter this time around to not take any candidate seriously who will choose to avoid debates and press conferences because it is a sign of their nonchalant attitude to work if they eventually win the elections
